review:
As the nu-metal floodgates open and wave after wave of rap
rock fusionists are forced upon us, Frat Party At The Pankake
Festival is yet more indication that Linkin Park are the pick
of the bunch. One of the most impressive music releases of
recent times, it offers five videos from their excellent Hybrid
Theory album alongside an interview, documentary and concert
footage. The contrast between the on and off-stage material
could not be greater, with six calm, eloquent young men we
encounter also capable of producing music of genuine rage
and real ferocity. Eschewing both the clichéd excess
of rock 'n' roll and absurd posturing of hip-hop (this collection
follows the album in being expletive free), they are refreshingly
devoid of the manufactured angst of some of their contemporaries--it
would be hard to imagine Fred Durst having this much fun.
Yet even with this relaxed attitude Linkin Park are, as the
incendiary live footage here proves, on their way to becoming
one of the most exciting bands of their generation.

The DVD: A superb, value-for-money package. The Dolby 2.0
Digital sound is perfect in capturing the band's state of
the art rock, while the inventive visuals of their video work
is also well represented. A range of extras include a documentary
on the making of "In The End", a multi-angle live
version of "Crawling" complete with audio commentary
from the director, more snippets of documentary and three
audio tracks. Someday all music DVDs will be like this. --Phil
