What songs will my jazz band perform?
A jazz bands repertoire very much depends on the style of band you've chosen. Some bands will be able to perform music from multiple jazz genres while other will only perform one particular style.
Alive Network's most popular jazz bands are listed below along with the style of repertoire performed by each act:
- Traditional Jazz & Dixieland bands: Think New Orleans/Charleston music and old school jazz music from artists such as Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory & Duke Ellington
- Swing Jazz bands: Often featuring a vocalist and performing Rat Pack classics from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Glen Miller along with more contemporary music from artist such as Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullem.
- Jazz Standards bands: Bands who perform jazz standards often take inspiration from The Great American Songbook and Middle of the road (MOR) jazz classics. These bands may or may not include vocalists.
- Contemporary Pop Music in a jazz style: Many modern jazz musicians have taken influence from a variety of music genres. This musical versatility has spawned a huge increase of bands who can perform modern pop music with an authentic jazz style perfect for customers who don't know their Gershwin from their Grapelli but want that jazz sound and style at their event!
Jazz Band Prices - What does a jazz band cost?
With jazz bands ranging from 3 piece ensembles up to full jazz orchestras with 18+ members, the cost of a jazz band varies greatly.
On the lower end, a jazz singer/pianist performing in their local area can start from as little as £300 while a top flight jazz orchestra can come in at £10,000 and more!
The average cost for a 3 - 5 piece jazz band in 2016 was between £750 and £1200 depending on the number of musicians.
What do I need to know about booking a jazz band?
Equipment: The vast majority of Alive Network's jazz bands are fully self-contained with their own PA systems, instruments, amplifiers and where necessary, stage lighting. Larger bands may have additional requirements in terms of chairs and tables but this will always be discussed with you during the booking process.
Space: Ideally musicians require at least 1.5 metres per musician with drummers and pianists needing slightly more. If your band also use a PA system, then space in front and at the sides is also required for speakers and potentially lighting stands. Most musicians are adept at working with the space provided but it's always worth confirming available space with your venue at the time of booking so that this information can be discussed with your entertainment coordinator.
Performance times: For a band booked to perform at an evening party, the standard timings are 2 x 60 minutes although this can be split into 3 x 40 minute sets if preferred. For a band performing during a drinks reception or meal, these timings can be more flexible to suit your requirements.
What will a jazz band need?
Apart from a safe performance area with a 3 or 4 power sockets, parking provision preferably with easy access to the venue, a changing room and refreshments such as soft drinks and sometimes food (depending on how long you have booked them for), most jazz bands require very little from you to be able to put on a great performance at your event.
