Sarah & Nick Barlow's 1940s Themed Party

Sarah & Nick Barlow's 1940s Themed Party

Real Life Party Entertainment.

Sarah and Nick Barlow held a 1940s themed party at Lansil Sports and Social Club in Lancaster on Saturday 25th June to celebrate their marriage and Armed Forces Day. They booked wedding DJ, Aron Lee Disco, who played a broad selection of music to suit all age groups, adding the perfect balance to their party.

What party were you organising, and who was it for?

I organised the party for myself, my new husband, and all of our family and friends. It was to celebrate our wedding - which came as a surprise to many of the guests! We eloped to Skipton a few weeks before the party, and married in private. The party was a way of telling everyone what we'd done, and it coincided with Armed Forces Day, so that gave us the idea for a theme.

Where did your party take place, and why did you choose that venue?

We chose Lansil Sport and Social Club in Lancaster, which is local to us. Because our families are widely spread, it was important to be near the motorway and have plenty of accommodation nearby. The club is a small and friendly club which provided smashing catering for us, and they were happy for us to decorate the room exactly how we wanted it.

Did you have a specific theme or format for your party?

We themed the party around the 1940s. My husband and I met through historical re-enactments, and many of our friends are involved too. So when we realised it was Armed Forces Day, it just fell into place. The invitations we sent were modelled on call-up letters, and we had red, white and blue balloons everywhere. It was easy enough for people to dress for - just a dash of red lipstick for the women, a suit for the men. We also had some inflatable spitfires, which the children loved.

Please tell us about the entertainment you booked through Alive Network, and why you chose that artist

When we looked into party ideas, we decided to book wedding DJ, Aron Lee Disco. We chose him because he was relatively local and he offered such a wide range of music. We wanted the evening to start with 1940s music, to set the atmosphere while we ate the buffet, but then we asked him to switch to more typical disco music. Later, our guests requested Northern Soul and he happened to have a large amount of that, too! He said he was keen to play at an event which gave him the chance to dust off the Glenn Miller music!

Please tell us about the performance, and the impact it had on your event

It was everything we could have wished for. Having the 1940s music at the start got people relaxed then once we'd eaten he chose exactly the right music to get people dancing.

What other suppliers/services did you use, and please provide commentary on any you feel were particularly notable

Most of the party decorations, e.g., posters and inflatable’s we bought on-line from Party Packs, and they were excellent. Kath Jones at Madam Chocolat made us thirty 1940s themed cupcakes which we had in place of a wedding cake, and she delivered to the venue.

In your own words please describe the stand-out moments of the party

I had no idea my grandfather could dance the Macarena, or do the twist! When the 1940s music was playing he danced with all the ladies, and when the music switched he stayed on the dance floor!!

Any pearls of wisdom you would like to extend to other party planners

I would advise party planners to keep the children happy. Happy children means happy parents! We had about 11 children at the event, so I created special party bags for them. Each bag contained a disposable camera, sweets, colouring pencils and "top secret instructions" to take photos of adults being silly. On a quiet table I put lots of colouring pictures for the younger children.
