The four young members of the MINERVA QUARTET demonstrate
their versatility and mastery of style by performing programmes
of standard classical works, as well as offering popular
repertoire for those special celebrations.
In
addition to formal recitals the quartet entertains at receptions,
balls and private parties. Indeed an increasingly popular
engagement is to provide music for weddings, most often
at the reception but also during the ceremony.
Programmes
for other occasions, for example lecture recitals, educational
workshops, exhibitions and charity concerts, are also frequently
presented by the quartet. Recital repertoire includes complete
quartets by Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Schubert,
as well as Shostakovich, Britten and other twentieth century
composers.
For
that special occasion when you need music of a lighter style,
a full repertoire list is shown below, and the programme
then arranged to give you exactly the music you want to
hear.
The
Minerva Quartet normally offers a varied programme of one
and a half to two hours duration. Below is listed a selection
of repertoire, but we are always happy to accommodate special
requests if possible.
Awarded
the Gold Medallion by the Associated Board of the Royal
Schools of Music at the age of 14, Katy Latham (pictured
far right) went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music.
After graduating in 1990 joined the staff at Wells Cathedral
School. Katy now works as a freelance musician and is the
visiting violin tutor at the University of the West of England.
As well as playing in local orchestras including the Brunel
Ensemble, she has recently given solo performances of Bach's
A minor and D minor (double) violin concertos. Katy also
palys regularly for the orchestra of Welsh National Opera.
Recordings for BBC television programmes have included The
Restless Year and Antiques Roadshow.
Lisa
Betteridge (pictured far left) studied at the Junior Dept.
of the Royal Academy of Music, at Birmingham University
where she gained a BMus(Hons) and as a postgraduate at Trinity
College of Music. She plays frequently in the Pump Room
Trio, Bath and with the Brunel Ensemble, and has also worked
with the London Sinfonietta, European Women's Orchestra,
Opera Project and Bath City Orchestra. Lisa has recently
performed Haydn's violin concerto in G and the Malcolm Arnold
Double Concerto with the Argyle String Orchestra.
Sarah
Heins (pictured centre left) studied violin and viola at
Trinity College of Music, and was awarded a viola scholarship
to continue her postgraduate studies there. In 1994 she
went to South Africa to play in their National Chamber Orchestra
and was involved in a pioneering education programme. Since
returning to England Sarah has been playing regularly with
the London City Ballet, English String Orchestra and the
orchestra of the Welsh National Opera.
Born
in Wiltshire, Emmeline Brewer (pictured centre right) studied
locally before attending the Junior Dept. of the Royal Academy
of Music. In 1994 she graduated in music with first class
honours from Bristol University where she took cello lessons
with Ioan Davies. Along with quartet commitments she now
freelances in the Bristol area playing regularly in the
Pump Room Trio, Bath and the Brunel Ensemble, of which she
is a founder member.
The Minerva Quartet in Concert
Formed
in March 1996, the Minerva Quartet brings together four
talented young players from the West Country. The quartet
made its public recital debut in August '96 at Prior Park,
Bath performing in aid of the MusicSpace Trust, and earlier
this year gave lunchtime concerts at St Mary Redcliffe,
Bristol, and at the Octagon, University of the West of England.
The quartet has also recently performed in the Hereford
Three Choirs Festival Fringe.
In
August 1997 the Minerva Quartet was awarded bursaries by
Dartington Music Trust and the Tillet Trust to study at
Dartington on the advanced chamber music course, where they
were coached in daily masterclasses by Sandor Devich, Professor
of Chamber Music at the Franz Liszt Academy, Budapest. Future
concert plans include a return visit to the Octagon, UWE,
and a recital as part of the 1998 Nailsworth Festival.
".....
in the area in which we live there has not been a string
quartet of this quality for some considerable time."-
(Dr
Ioan Davies, Head of Strings, Wells Cathedral School.)
